Asia-Pacific Leads in Broadband Connectivity, But Divide Prevails, ITU Report
Earlier this week, ITU’s 2008 Asia-Pacific Telecommunications/ICT Indicators report was launched at the ITU Telecom Asia Summit.
The report revealed an increasing digital divide in most of the Asia-Pacific region with broadband services unaffordable or unavailable in many locations, whereas in rich economies one in four persons is a broadband subscriber. By early 2008, Asia-pacific has over two billion telecoms subscribers, of which two-thirds on mobiles.
Australia’s broadband sector performance may not be as poor as often claimed, with new data showing Australia holding a respectable position in the Asia-Pacific region.
