Sergio Antocicco, INTUG Chairman, Dies at 67

INTUG chairman Sergio Antocicco died in a Rome hospital early Sunday morning of complications following brain surgery he had undergone several days previously.

After he had been on the INTUG board for several years, Dr. Antocicco was elected Chair in 2005.

Born in Naples in 1943, and educated as an Electronic Engineer, he held multiple positions in private companies and non-profit organizations throughout his professional life. Dr. Antocicco also held the Presidency of ANUIT, the Italian Users Association for the ICT sector. Besides, he was President of ENSA, the European New Society Association, an organization that fosters innovation in education through ICT, based in Paris.

Moreover, Dr. Antocicco was President of Rome-based Istedil, a company providing testing and control services for materials and tools used in the building industry.

He was the expert for telecommunication issues of IlSole24ore, an Italian economic newspaper, and he appeared in radio and TV shows regularly.

Dr. Antocicco graduated in Nuclear Electronic Engineering from Naples University. After five years in the nuclear industry, where he worked on electronic security systems, he moved on to information technology. In 1978, he became the CIO of Confindustria, an organization representing the interests of some 130,000 private Italian companies.

From 1989 to 1999, he was Vice-President of the Commission on Information and Telecommunication Policies at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris. In 1999, the Italian Government appointed Dr. Antocicco Director of the Italian Control Room for the “Y2K problem”.

Dr. Antocicco was Professor of Computer Science at LUISS University in Rome and Professor for its MBA program between 1980 and 2001.

Sergio will be remembered as a skillful lobbyist who played an important role in helping shape the EU telecommunications policy.

INTUG has lost a very dear friend with a passion for technology and “la vita dolce”. We express our deepest sympathies to Sergio’s family. May he rest in peace.

I was shocked and greatly saddened to hear of the death of an old friend and colleague of 25 years. Sergio will be missed by thousands of his colleagues, students and his friends. My deepest condolences and sympathies go out to his family.

Sergio was a pioneer in ensuring change which would benefit all consumers of ICT services but at the same time, he bridged the gap between the supplies of services and their customers, both on the domestic front in Italy and on an international basis. He was tireless in pushing for change. His personality and his energies will be solely missed.

On a personal level, he was a kind and gentle man who always looked after his ‘guests’ when meetings were held in Italy. His attention to detail and his energy was boundless in making sure that everyone was enjoying their stay in his country.

I will always remember him as a good friend as well as a colleague.

I was very fortunate to have met Sergio. I met with him in Washington DC to attend as INTUG delegation several meetings with FCC Commissioner Deborah Tate and the FTC. Visionary, warm, knowledgeable and with a great sense of humor, his deeds ans spirit will remain among us as an inspiration to work hard for our goals.
