International Telecommunications Body Appoints New Chair

The International Telecommunications Users Group (INTUG) has appointed Rosemary Sinclair of Australia as its new Chairperson, taking over from Dr. Sergio Antocicco of Italy who passed away suddenly in May.

Rosemary Sinclair is Managing Director of the Australian Telecommunications Users Group, based in Sydney. She has held that position since 2001 and has served on the Board of INTUG for the past 8 years.

In accepting the position, Ms Sinclair paid tribute to her predecessor:

“Sergio did a wonderful job in leading and inspiring the national user groups that comprise INTUG’s membership,” she said. “His passing was a great shock to all our members and we now have the challenge and responsibility to continue representing the interests of business users of communications services to a high standard.

The value of INTUG is that different priorities and market solutions can be shared among members in all parts of the globe facing different priorities and market circumstances. Examples include INTUG’s work on International Roaming rate reductions in Europe, on Competition in an NGN world, support for the Terminate the Rate Campaign and in Asia-Pacific work on developing models for Government subsidy for extended and accelerated national fiber deployment.

In some markets, the fixed line network upgrade from copper to fiber is the key issue – and the balance must be found between the opportunity for innovation and investment and the interests of end users in competition, choice and affordable services.

In other markets, the priority area is the development of mobile services and markets. Members are focused on exorbitant and often highly unpredictable costs of international mobile roaming, and excessive termination charges for calls to mobile phones – both major concerns around the world, especially to business users.”

Ms. Sinclair concluded, “I am looking forward to the challenge of working with the INTUG members and Board to make sure that wherever communications policy is being decided, business users continue to have a powerful and effective voice through INTUG’s advocacy.”
