Yesterday, European president José Manuel Barroso unveiled his new team for the next four years. ICT and Telecoms – the so-called Digital Agenda – will be in the hands of current Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes.

The Digital Agenda portfolio includes both the services Information Society (INFSO) and the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA). The MEDIA Programme Unit will move to the Directorate General for Education and Culture (EAC).

The current Commissioner for ICT and Telecoms Viviane Reding will take the helm at the DG Justice, Liberty and Security.

In a first reaction, Nick White, Executive Vice President of INTUG said, “INTUG looks forward to working with the new Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes to help develop a single European market for Communications Services, which can be a powerful enabler for growth, productivity and job creation for the whole economy.”

The new Commission must gain approval from the European Parliament before it takes office. The vote of consent on the new Commission as a whole is foreseen to take place on 26 January 2010. On the basis of the vote of consent, the Commission shall be appointed by the European Council. Then it can start working.
