EU Ministers Agree on 2020 Strategy

On 19 April the EU ministers responsible for the Information Society policy of the European Union member states and the European Economic Area agreed on the new digital agenda for the next ten years.

The so-called EU2020 Strategy comprises action on high-speed broadband infrastructure, advanced use of the open Internet, security and trust, digital user rights, the digital single market, public digital services, and strengthening the competitiveness of the ICT industry.

The EU ministers also seek to strengthen the role of the EU in international fora for ICT standards, audiovisual policy and digital rights, and strive to safeguard the evolution of Internet Governance in line with principles such as transparency, multilateralism, democracy and the full involvement of all stakeholders.

Nick White, INTUG Executive Vice President said, “INTUG welcomes the Granada Declaration’s recognition of the crucial role of very high-speed broadband in assisting economic recovery. Rapid and consistent transposition of the new European Framework will be a key enabler, in support of competitive open access to next generation infrastructure facilities. This will be vital if business users are to introduce new processes seamlessly and efficiently across very high speed international networks.”
