Cloud Computing May Increase Management Costs and Lose Guaranteed QoS
Today, INTUG released a paper on cloud computing, which talks about IT companies embracing the cloud computing opportunity as a way of providing additional services to their existing and potential customers.
The paper, written by INTUG Board Member Jon Neville, warns that savings in hardware and software costs may not offset increases in management costs. A recent study of vendors offering unified communications from the “cloud” shows that they must provide the fully-loaded UC solution, including network costs, for under USD50 per user per month.
The paper says that buyers of cloud-based services should also consider the potential downside of possible compromises in service levels and security.
Jon Neville said, “Cloud computing is now on everyone’s agenda. Organizations from small to large enterprises, government, educational establishments, and even the military are investigating whether cloud computing can transform their IT infrastructure, not only to reduce cost, but also to ease maintenance, support and upgradeability.
INTUG recommends companies avoid the pitfalls associated with adoption of this technology by following a six point action plan checklist to maximize the likelihood of a successful implementation with a sound financial return”.
