The fast-growing popularity of smartphones and tablets is driving growth in mobile broadband services. Wireless broadband subscriptions in OECD countries had exceeded half a billion by the end of 2010, an increase of more than 10 percent on June 2010, according to new OECD statistics.

The OECD has released new statistics on broadband penetration in OECD countries as of June 2010. These include the number of broadband subscribers per country, broadband subscriptions by technology, the percentage of fiber connections in total broadband and, for the first time, a wireless broadband penetration indicator.

Consumers benefit from better telecoms services and higher investment levels in countries where the national telecoms regulatory authority has strong powers and is active in using them, according to a report published by the European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA).
