The European Commission aims to achieve 100 per cent high speed internet coverage for all citizens by 2010 as part of the European Economic Recovery Plan. The money is needed to help rural areas get online, bring new jobs and help businesses grow, according to the EC.

The economic downturn will hit the Internet economy hard this year, according to the latest available figures from the OECD. The Information Technology Outlook 2008 estimates that the IT industry is likely to have grown by 4% at most in 2008 compared to the previous year. But growth will remain flat or decline in 2009.
